We tightened our seat belts, sank into our uncomfortable shaking seats and held hands. Jolting back and forth, side to side, and descending 100′s maybe even 1000′s of feet at a time we exchanged looks of panic and fear. We knew at that moment our lives were to be trusted in a man we’ll never know and we began to pray…
I lay there annoyed, excited and tired all at the same time. The alarm continued to let me know it was time to wake up and I wasn’t obeying. Today was the day we left for our 7 day vacation to Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Hitting the snooze button twice I quickly remembered the in-laws would be here to take us to the airport. Not only that, but Jared offered up eggs and bacon, at 4:30am. I hopped out of my nice warm bed and bared myself into our, what felt like, 30 degree bedroom. As fast as I could I threw on the attire I had laid out the night before. I was freezing and couldn’t dress fast enough. I completed all my morning tasks, in-laws were fed, and we were on our way.
As we boarded the plane, found our seats and argued over the window seat we finally nestled in. The captain came on in his low mysterious voice and recited the current weather conditions. We then began to depart. On the run way our plane quickly picked up speed and then graciously lifted into the air. Clanking and booming sounds came from below and Jared comfortingly told me the pilot was bringing up the landing gear. We were off…
Our plane began to shake. Quick jolts of side to side and then up and down. I began searching for my puke bag in the seat pocket in front of me. Found it. I hoped my neighbor wouldn’t be needing his, mine was too small to hold anything I was about to be sharing. The turbulence began to intensify and my nerves became weaker. I gave a quick glance to Jared who looked just as sick and worried as I was. Now, Ive experienced plane turbulence before, but that was nothing compared to what we were going through. This was a nightmare! “Control tower tells us we may be coming into some rough patches of turbulence here soon.” Whaattt?? You mean the worst hasn’t hit yet? Oy… After the pilot made his announcement, we tightened our seat belts and hung on. To each other.
Obviously we made it down safely. That night Jared and I made our bed, crawled in, and he confessed to me he thought we were going to die up there. I agreed and then began thanking my Lord he brought us down in one piece! During the plane ride though I kept having flashbacks of the first episode of LOST. Who was going to be our Jack?
Here are a couple of images from our trip. More to come in Part 2!
